We live within systems designed to measure, accelerate and improve everything: algorithms, bodies, productivity and attention.

But what defines human improvement? What gets pushed aside when every part of life becomes something to optimise? What truly matters beyond measure?

And what happens when an art biennale launches a coin?

Launching The Wrong Coin

After thirteen years and seven editions, The Wrong is preparing to introduce its own coin, with the aim of supporting the next edition and the artists and curators who make it possible.

The internet has transformed how art is created, shared and experienced. Funding the work remains an unfinished task.

With TW8, we want to explore whether a coin can help turn the reach of an independent cultural network into resources for its community.

The question is simple. Can we build something that funds the things we value?

Making the impossible possible again

TW8 turns The Wrong’s international reach towards its artists and curators: stronger support for selected Pavilions, dedicated international promotion and, for the first time, financial grants through The Wrong Awards.

The proposed coin launch brings this ambition into the edition itself. Under the title Optimise Whatever, The Wrong enters the systems of value, attention and circulation that its programme invites artists to examine.

What gives something value? Who creates it? Who receives it? And how much of that value can find its way back to art?

The ambition is to help finance the Biennale, support independent exhibitions and give exceptional artistic and curatorial work the resources to continue.

Before the launch

The coin’s name, structure, supply, allocation and launch terms will be published before it becomes available, alongside an explanation of how funds raised would support TW8 and The Wrong Awards.

The launch date will be announced separately from the exhibition programme.

Participation in the coin will not guarantee Pavilion selection, an award or influence over curatorial decisions.

Propose a Pavilion

A Pavilion is an independently curated digital exhibition created by an artist, curator, collective, university, gallery, institution or cultural organisation.

An Individual Pavilion presents one artist. A Group Pavilion brings together two or more artists.

Each selected Pavilion is developed independently and connects to the Biennale through its communication network and curatorial framework.

Proposals are evaluated on originality, artistic excellence, curatorial vision, relevance to contemporary digital culture and potential to create meaningful connections.

Submission terms, including any contribution requirements and available waivers, will be published separately from the coin’s launch terms.

The Wrong Awards

TW8 introduces The Wrong Awards to recognise and support exceptional artistic and curatorial work emerging from the Biennale.

Every selected Pavilion, its curator and participating artists are automatically eligible. No separate application is required.

The jury will recognise outstanding work through financial grants, international promotion and visibility across The Wrong network.

The ambition is for the coin launch to contribute to this programme. The Awards fund, grant amounts and number of recipients will depend on funding secured and will be announced once confirmed.

Financial participation never purchases recognition or influence over the outcome.

A personal note

I started The Wrong in 2013 imagining a biennale for digital art that worked like the internet: connected, spread across places and full of things you were not looking for.

It became what it is because artists and curators made it their own; because institutions opened their doors; and because audiences, friends and strangers carried it further.

Together, we built a network capable of bringing art to people almost anywhere. I want that network to become better at supporting the people who create it.

Launching a coin is a new experiment in that ongoing work. Its purpose begins with a practical question: can the community that made The Wrong possible help give its next chapter a stronger foundation?
